Seeing the world other
methods struggle to observe
The work begins with the mechanisms of ion formation and applies that understanding to rapid clinical screening of carbohydrates, material identification for plastic recycling, and the direct detection of intermediates in catalysis.
Research directions
Ionization Mechanisms: MALDI and MAI
Absolute ionization efficiency measurements used to establish how solid matrices generate gas-phase ions in MALDI and MAI.
Carbohydrate Mass Spectrometry with Machine-Learning Classification
Improving quantitative reproducibility in carbohydrate mass spectrometry and coupling it to machine-learning classification for clinical screening.
Mass-Spectrometric Identification of Plastics for Recycling
Mass-spectrometric fingerprints combined with classification models to identify mixed polymers and improve the sorting stage of plastic recycling.
Detection of Reactive Intermediates in Catalysis
Customized inlet systems used to detect transient species during catalysis, providing the evidence needed to distinguish between mechanistic proposals.

Technical Platform
We run a customized mass spectrometry platform open to other research groups, for measurements that standard instrument centres cannot make. About the platform →
The group
The group's work spans ionization mechanisms, analytical method development, and reaction dynamics, so members with quite different interests and strengths can each find a project that suits them. Meet the group →
